In spring, new branches grow from the treetops, tender green leaves sprout, and yellow flowers bloom throughout the campus. Through the glass, Colasa's creations can be seen, set against the backdrop of Tsinghua University's vibrant spring. With a free, bold use of colors and expression, unrestrained techniques, and mixed media, Colasa's continuous innovation reflects unique creativity and thought. Colasa's work, "I Was Here," boldly ventures into the Tsinghua campus this time.

A true master does not depict themselves with words. They simply turn their passions into daily life.

The entire city is his canvas.

Colasa Lin Xuan-Yi, a contemporary Taiwanese artist, started in art classes from a young age, and his work is deeply inspired by traditional Oriental ink painting. After graduating from high school, Colasa fell in love with skateboarding and graffiti, using walls as his canvas. He subverted traditional artistic forms, continually challenging his creativity, and leading trends in street and subculture.

With unruly long hair, his eyebrows exude a sense of ease and spontaneity. His unique visual style has garnered international popularity and brand favor. Often seen quietly painting by a wall, this was the first time I heard him talk extensively about his work. Not only did I hear his thoughts on his creations, but I also saw his passion and dedication to art.

"I have no persistence; I just keep doing what I love. Because you aren't doing it for persistence, over time, you realize this is 'persistence'." — Colasa

Freedom has always been the spirit of my creations

Persistence and Challenges in Creation

Creation is like this, you have to always do what you truly want to do. Whether it's studying or painting, 'time' is an important element, said Colasa. The key is not in the time itself, but in the process of creating this time. He has been favored by many brands and enjoys graffiti' as it allows for various cross-disciplinary combinations. Imagination is more important, he believes that 'solving problems in the process is what's truly interesting, and it allows him the freedom to do what he loves.

Time's Tempering: Art and Social Concern

With the tempering of time, he has moved beyond focusing on technical performance to enhancing imagination and social concern, aiming to touch the deep inner world of the audience. Colasa, who loves swimming in the sea, believes that travel brings different inspirations. Using materials from today's society: discovering beach trash and waste, which have contemporary symbolic connections. By molding the statue of David and using vibrant materials, he presents novelty while exploring the issue of environmental pollution. It hints at how people focus on appearances but neglect deeper meanings. His artworks combine marine debris materials, expressing the concept of sustainability and environmental protection, reminding people to pay attention to social issues.

I like to take a long time to do something that can be completed quickly. This records the trajectory of each moment of creation, symbolizing the pause of flowing time, allowing the feeling of each moment's stillness. — Colasa

Leonardo da Vinci of the Graffiti Art World: Clay, Plastic Sheets - Time Pause Series

I like to draw slowly, starting from a single point, gradually forming lines, then surfaces. I draw with dots, create with clay, and even knit yarn. I aim to add a three-dimensional aspect to the paint, taking a long time to do what could be done quickly. "I Was Here" was his first creation at school, completed in six days. Colasa expresses creativity and inspiration freely, subverting school constraints. His works are both conflicting and captivating. The "Time Pause Series" uses multi-layered plastic sheets to record time. "I Was Here" shares the same transient nature as street art. Beyond exploring interpretations of time, the layered creation method invites viewers to feel each paused moment.

Fingerprints on clay serve as a mark, exploring the passage of time. Each layer of clay solidifies a moment. The uniqueness of fingerprints in the fourth dimension strengthens the existence of individual time points, allowing a 'Time Pause' to reflect on each recorded step. This abstract-to-concrete analysis examines contemporary painting.

"I don't like doing the same things as others. If everyone is doing the same thing, there are too many people who can do it better than you." — Colasa

Breaking free from the limitations of the brush: Making space appear real

Brushes cannot comprehend space in a painting, and traditional painting has limitations in virtual reality. Thus, he began creating in three-dimensional space, like VR painting, demonstrating human understanding and application of space, developing human mastery of space. This not only enhances the sense of presence but also makes space appear real.

Colasa breaks away from traditional painting tools, comparing virtual reality painting to medical tomography, eventually forming a 3D image. At this moment, the 'surface' generates volumes, materials, and a sense of space. "Plastic sheets" fragment time, each cut point echoing with transparency, layering brushstrokes in a continuous cycle.
